Where does the name Douglas in Charlotte – Douglas International Airport come from?
In 1935 Charlotte chamber of commerce asked for the city mayor for an airport near Charlotte city because of the increasing popularity of the city day by day.
Works Progress Administration handover appropriations to the city’s authority & in 1936 workers started construction work for their first city airport.
Charlotte city mayor (1935 – 1941) Ben Elbert Douglas was the maker of people’s dreams with his prior instructions.
On April 21, 1941, New York City Mayor Fiorella La Guardia and different local dictators addressed in front of 10,000 Charlotteans at the dedicational ceremony of Douglas Municipal Airport named in honor of Ben Elbert Douglas.
Later it was used for world war II, that time also known as Morris Field Air Base.
